Beyond SR&ED
What is SR&ED ?
Formally known as the Scientific Research and Experimental Development program, SR&ED is a federal tax incentive administered by the Canada Revenue Agency to encourage companies in Canada to perform research and development (R&D).
It provides tax credits or cash refunds to offset the costs of eligible R&D work.
How Can my Business Benefit?
Businesses can receive:
Investment Tax Credits (ITCs) on qualifying R&D expenses
Refundable credits (cash back) for certain companies, especially Canadian-Controlled Private Corporations (CCPCs)
Support for expenses like:
Employee wages for R&D work
Materials used in experiments
Contractor payments
Some overhead costs
For many small Canadian companies, the refundable credit can be up to 35% of eligible R&D expenditures.
